I firmly believe that education is the foundation of opportunity in every community. Whether an individual’s path leads them to college or the trades, the building blocks of a lifetime of learning are laid in our public schools. In an economy and job market that is constantly changing, we need to ensure that students are given the opportunities and tools they need to thrive.
Two budgets recently passed by the Legislature and signed by Governor Healey — the fiscal year 2026 budget and a supplementary budget for the 2025 fiscal year — deliver critical investments in public education on Cape Ann and across Massachusetts. From early education and special education supports to expanded career and technical learning opportunities, these investments reflect our shared commitment to ensuring every student has access to high-quality learning environments, no matter their background or zip code.
Locally, we are making investments into programs that set our students up for success, as well as serve as a model for other school districts around the Commonwealth. Working in partnership with Senator Bruce Tarr, I was proud to help secure new funding for several key projects and programs that support Cape Ann’s students.
The Science Central program at O’Maley Innovation Middle School is an interdisciplinary STEM-learning program, combining student-led inquiry with hands-on experimentation and cutting-edge technology. Created by teachers here on Cape Ann, the program is an innovative approach to STEM education that is engaging learners to be prepared for the opportunities of tomorrow. Science Central will receive $100,000 to support capital improvements and equipment for hands-on STEM education.
The vocational programs at Gloucester High School provide pathways for students into high-demand careers. For students who thrive when working with their hands, these programs are setting up students for well-paying jobs that do not require a college education. With the upcoming addition of a medical assisting program, the Gloucester Vocational School is continuing to expand opportunities for students on Cape Ann. Gloucester High School will receive $100,000 for the support of the vocational school.
These investments will help ensure that students on Cape Ann have the tools they need to learn, grow, and thrive. I am looking forward to continuing to work with educators, families, and local administrators to build a strong future for the next generation of Massachusetts students on Cape Ann.
